A few from Uppingham Vale Judo Club took a trip to Thetford for the East Anglian Fours.

What a great day and what a really good event for youngsters just starting out to gain competitive experience.

Edward Ashton-Roberts, Louie Brown and Archie Utting were all fighting. There were some really great displays of Judo and some tough fought fights. All of our fighters came away with Bronze medals in groups which all had very skilled opponents.

Well done to Edward, Louis and Archie!!

There are more competitions coming up which everyone will benefit from attending and building their competitive experience.

Previously I put forward the idea of a midweek Randori session at Uppingham.

With a number of Vale Judoka competing at a high level and also in the England squad I think it is important we provide the opportunity to give them the support they need.

While there is a requirement to maintain a level of fitness there is also the need to have time on the mat to learn new techniques and to practise.

I am prepared to run a session from 1930 to 2030ish straight after the Uppingham Junior class.

This session would be open to those who are competing regularly and really want to improve.

With the right amount of attendance I would like to begin this session from 3rd May.

Please get in touch all those who are interested.

On Sunday 23rd April four Vale Judoka went to their first competition at the Nottingham Red Belt Rumble.

Jacob Saunderson from Oakham

Louie Brown from Uppingham

Charlie Utting from Uppingham

Archie Utting from Uppingham

Everyone fought extremely well and got stuck in. They all had a good experience from the weigh in to the obligatory waiting to fight while the nerves kick in.

The nerves didn't seem to phase any of them and from bow I can honestly say all four went out and fought with purpose.

It was a great display from these young chaps.

The Utting brothers having only been to four sessions put on a great display of courage and doggedness.

There were some very close fights and we almost came home with a gold from Louie.

Jacob - Bronze

Louie - Silver

Charlie - Bronze

Archie - Silver

Well done all!!!

James and Karis competed in the Northern Ireland Open in Derry on the 23rd April.

1st to weigh in and compete was James fighting in the Cadet u18 age group and the u50kg weight group after a by ( he was seeded no 2 ) , his first fight he won in Golden score ( new rules mean no yukos and wazari score 1 and no amount of wazari lead to ippons now so you can do numerous wazari throws ) James then managed to win against his next opponent who  He had previously lost to in the championships. This result took James through to the final for gold or silver after being equal after the 4 minutes it was then Golden score again in the end James lost to a shido after being exhausted so a well earned Silver medal.

Karis was in a pool of 5 and managed a great 1st win by ippon in under 30 seconds she was less succesful in other fights but learned a lot and earned a bronze medal and valuable ippon points in her group of pre-cadets u15 u63kg.

A great day for our vale judoka we will definitely be coming to...
